Valve shim tool

Post by wengr »

Hello, Before I took my head apart I checked clearances. thought I could reassemble it with the new correct shims. But with the new cambox gaskets, the clearances are all to large. So I guess it has to be done with cams in place. As the tool for depressing the tappets seems to be getting scarce, and the price for those available is pretty high, does anyone have any methods for doing it wihout the tool? thanks in advance.

Ron, please add your self to that list! Thanks for dropping by last night to help me diagnose the problem with my compression tester. Your willingness to help is always appreciated.

Today driving home my cae died as well as leaked oil into the spark plug holes (I think leaky cam cover gasket and not related). It started a few more times and ran great for about ten seconds and then died. I towed it home and tried to pull start it and after about a 10th of a mile it started and ran great for 10 secs and died again. I got it home, good spark, good gas and 30 lbs of compression all four cylinders. I read around the site and sounds to me like bad shims on my valves. What do you guys think? I have never replaced shims, is it difficult to do? My compression to begin with was only around 80 lbs all four cylinders. I'm going to dive into it but I don't want to take the head off if it's the valve shims. I am ruling out a blown head gasket because all my spark plugs looked dry and good, and the compression loss is overall and if it was blown I would expect more in one or the other.
You guys tell me what you think. I need this car running asap so I am going to pull the camm covers tonight. I will also read the book and look around here so I may answer some of my own questions but do I need to pull the head, cams, both to shim it? Help!

Ok all, I got it fixed. It was a worn timing belt. I must have gotten it too tight when I put the new one on last time and it shredded the teeth. It's all good now. Runs great.
