Here is what I have done for my front suspension. The spring and shock are QA1 for a GM application(the lightest they show) I always suspected I would have to shorten the spring. The whole assembly went in the car an hour ago and I will have to shorten the spring 1 coil to give enough adjustment. The brakes are from an 89 Honda. I fabricated the mounting bracket for the caliper(very similar to original) The rotor is larger than stock but still fits inside 13" wheels. The pads are larger also. The piston is close enough to use the original master cyl. As you can see the rotor is vented. I added stiffeners to the lower A arm and welded all joints to stregthen the shock mounting. The spring accepts the stock upper mounting bushing.

Re: Coil over front suspension
are you using the stock upper shock mount for the coil over?
Re: Coil over front suspension
Only the shock mounts to the upper shock mount, the spring mounts in the original location. The spring only mounts on the lower end of the shock.

Hi Hal,
I don't know if your still posting here(I noticed this post is over a year old). I have been checking out the work you have posted on this forum on the cars you have built. Very nicely done professional work! .
I came across this particular post and noticed you did almost exactly what i did. Except I used QA1's retro-fit coil-overs for a mustang II type suspension instead of the gm ones you used. They have two different springs one for lighter front-ends and one for heavier. I used the lighter ones. The mustang II coil-overs are a little shorter height-wise but I located the pivot point on the top of the lower arm to make up for it. Didn't need to cut the spring. However, my car has a Chevy 4.3L v6 in it so the weight is a little heaver by about 75LBS, but I think having my battery in the trunk makes up for it. Anyway really love your work you are a great fabricator.
Here's a pic:
