Gas tank woes
Gas tank woes
Some advice on my fuel tank. The pick up tube appeared to be plugged, added compressed air and it opened up. Hooked an old fuel pump. Fuel came out but not much pressure or volume. Could be old pump or other restriction. Plan to drop tank and clean. Question: is there a screen or filter on the end ov the pick up tube and if so how do you get to it??????

Re: Gas tank woes
There is a brass (old) or nylon (new) "sock" on the end of the pickup tube, depending on vintage. They are fastened with a circular metal spring clip at the top of the sock. The metal ones in particular dissolve over time (ethanol?).
If your fuel gauge works, continue try cleaning the assembly; otherwise replace the whole thing for $30. Certainly I would recommend cleaning the tank and purging the hoses. You may have some evaporative emissions issues as well with gunk in the lines.
Careful you don't strip the 4 studs holding the tank to the trunk floor. Hit them with some pene oil beforehand.

Re: Gas tank woes
at the same time you are purging those lines, please change any rubber fuel delivery lines. they will tend to restrict fuel flow after enough ageing has occurred.
of course, then begin considering changing the rest of the rubber lines in that system, the return lines and the vapor lines

Thanks for the info. My sending unit does not have the pick up tube incorporated into it. My friend has a 78 and it does. Mine is an 80 w/FI. Pick up tube is mounted on the tank. I will keep all updated. Thanks again. Emo.
