New guy from Kentucky

Post by Hutch »

Hello all. I don't currently have a spider but am toying with the idea of picking one up. I drove a red 75 in HS during the late 70's. Got rid of it in 82 and still miss it. Just checking it.

Hello Hutch, and welcome.

This is a great place to get ideas that will enable you to narrow your search. Every model group has positives and negatives.

Maybe a red one with a white arrow down the side?

What a cool car for a HS kid to drive. A lot of us here returned to Spider ownership after many years of missing it. Good luck in your search if you decide to get back into one.

Thanks guys. Yes, it was a lot of fun to have a spider in HS. Especially since I lived in Charleston, SC at the time so got to go to the beach regularly. My father purchased that 75 new in Stuttgart, Germany (US spec car) and then shipped it back to the states in 77. I spent half the summer of 76 with him and on the weekends we would go to the Black Forest, Austria, Switzerland, etc. I would never let him turn on the radio because I just loved to listen to the car.

I am in Louisville, KY and haven't seen a spider around here in forever.

Is there a post or article that someone could provide a link to that would list the pros and cons of the different years? And what are the primary deal killers that you look for when considering the purchase of one of these cars?

Thanks again!

Rust would be the primary deal killer. Don't buy one sight unseen, as they can look good on the outside and be shot in the undercarriage. Structural members, shock towers, etc. make it extremely difficult/expensive to deal with. There are plenty available that don't have rust issues. In my case, I bought my car knowing it would need a tranny before long but there wasn't a spot of rust on it so I took that into consideration when I bought it.
There are forum members all over the country who are willing to check a car out for you find one away from home.

Well it looks like I am on the cusp of Spider Ownerdom!! What/who are some of the clubs or members closest to Louisville, KY? It would be fun to meet up with some folks once I get the car.

FLU is a semi-national club, they could tell if any clubs or owners were close. Ive seen some posts from Louisville, and there is a fella in Evansville. Other than that, Indpls has a weak club, and Mempis has a good organization.
