Homologation papers

Post by GarageRat »

With spare time right now to surf the web, I looked through the Fiat homologation papers on the FIA historic website (https://historicdb.fia.com/cars/list/fi ... e/fiat-308). It is really detailed and answers lots of debates I have seen on forums over the years. For example, some people cc the 1756 engine head at 47cc, others at 49cc. It turns out some of the heads were reported by Fiat as 47, and others 49. Additionally, most of the camshafts had the same size lobes but there were some with different sizes. Also, the 1995 engine with 8.9:1 ratio used a flattop piston with small valve cutouts but the head was 50.84cc, not 53 like the standard 2L. Obviously there is still some info not given, but it is worth a read through for those of us who like numbers!

Good point, GarageRat. From my time spent over many years working with engineers and designers, there are specs for pre-production, engineering analysis units, and process prove-in units. However, once you get into production, especially over long periods of time, changes are often made. Some inconsequential and others with more significance.

And it goes to show that just as all the experienced engine builders say, the only way to know the numbers on your rebuild is to measure it all!
