Re: Distributor coil electronic ignition
Hello,
I bought an NGK coil for mine when I switched to electronic ignition from points last year. Even though it says "Ballast resistor required" I spoke with their phone support and they assured me it would work fine seeing the full +12V. They were not wrong.
I believe it was this one:

Why do you want to replace yours? I can't remember the last time I had a blown coil. And the ones that did blow was installation error, they are such a simple piece of equipment that rarely if ever fails.
Cheers

Re: Distributor coil electronic ignition
I found an ignition coil that has the label still clearly marked. Not sure what year it came off. So I would be safe to put that on my car. Thanks for the reply

Yes REPLACE your coils. They are a maintenance item that is required to be replaced every so often.
There is a very common misconception that coils don't go bad. These type of coils do go bad as the fluid inside them doesn't stay inside them forever. This causes them to fail mostly by overheating.
Don't just take my word for it. If this wasn't the case then generic local auto parts stores wouldn't have so dang many of them. They simply wouldn't sell them if they didn't actually need to be replaced and/or go bad with age.
As for replacements (warning vendor hat now on )
We carry 3 perfectly good replacements for your car.
1: OE Marelli Mako unit
2: Bosch unit
3: Crane unit
All of which work perfect with the Fiat electronic ignition. I've personally run all of them and had no issues.
VENDOR HAT OFF
WARNING: If you are going to buy a cheap-o unit at a local parts store, please do some extra research. Most of these units are made for V8 engines and have a turn ratio that is WAY off the charts for your little 4 cylinder. This will burn up control modules. People seem to only focus on OHMs but turn ratio of a coil is JUST AS IMPORTANT when it comes to actual usage. I've seen countless burnt control modules due to the cheap-o coils.
All that said. If SteinOnkel has had good luck with the NGK unit that is good news for an additional coil.

Looking at the Marrelli unit, I see prices, Being a good consumer anywhere from 60.00 to 140 dollars. What is the difference?

Well some might be different types which might not actually be the unit for your car. Without seeing the ones specifically that you are mentioning I cannot be totally for sure.tima01864 wrote:Looking at the Marrelli unit, I see prices, Being a good consumer anywhere from 60.00 to 140 dollars. However, since we actually purchase the correct unit (SKU 21-2662) which is a Marelli BAE 207 A-MK1, I can say the our cost for the unit allows us to price them for $60. So if you find this unit for more than that cost then odds are they are either trying to rip you off OR they don't buy them from the source.

Re: Distributor coil electronic ignition
I've been running this one for about 10 years now. Works great, inexpensive, and has the same primary and secondary voltage specifications as the original Marelli coil.
