I am close to completing a valve job on my 1972 124 Spider. I had 1 valve seat replaced and all new valves installed and seated. One problem was that after re-gaping one valve was below the edge of the bucket.
However before re-installing back onto the engine I would like to ensure that the valve stem height is going to be within the shim-able range. I would like to measure that height but have not been able to find the dimension - from the top of the head to the top of the valve stem. I found a reference to it in a shop manual "Check height of valve stem above the cylinder head with gage A.86218" but no dimension of the gage is specified.
Any info would help.

Re: Valve Stem Height above the top of head
I found the info from Gay Croft http://www.guy-croft.com/viewtopic.php?t=1677, very helpful. I did a dry fit on the bench, I had to adjust the VSH on the new exh. valves by grinding the tops a bit, the intake valves were within spec. I'm glad I did these steps prior to assembly because I would have been right back in the same problem, with a valve gap to small allowing the cam to hit the top of the bucket. After assembly I adjusted the timing and carb. The car ran GREAT all summer and fall and did NOT consume any oil and the plugs stayed relatively clean ... I'm a happy camper.
