Heater hose firewall gasket

So, yeah, I'm a firm believer in the FIAT spider way of doing things: don't spend money. I seriously do not want to pay $15 for a new metal/rubber gasket when mine still has half the rubber on it! Anyone tried patch jobs, high temp silicone, whale blubber? It's just to keep fumes out of the passenger compartment, right? (Just...)

Yeah I balked at the price for that gasket so I peeled the old rubber off of mine and covered the metal piece with a product called "sugru". You mold it and it sets like rubber. Has lasted fine and seems to tolerate the heat there as well.

You could just use an piece of old inner tube and save the $11 to $18 that it costs to purchase the sugru glue/hand putty.

For about one third to half the cost of the sugru you could form it on a sheet of waxed paper with the old metal parts and black RTV sealant too.
