Smoking alternator. Bit of a long story. My starter went in that when I turned the key nothing. After trying different things had starter rebuilt including the solenoid. Sat for a year before installing the starter, battery dead, not taking a charge. Bump started the car, ran fine. Got a new battery started the car and smoke coming from the alternator. Now when I turn the key nothing, (just checking if the solenoid is fried again and it appears to be the case). So it looks like a rebuild of solenoid and alternator but the bigger question is what is the root cause??
And yes the battery was connected correctly, even tested it with a volt meter. Any suggestions on what to check??
UPDATE: I reconnected the batter and even with no key in the ignition, the alternator gets incredibly hot and starts to smoke.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Burnt alternator and solenoid
Hello
Is this an original alternator setup with the external regulator? I connected my battery once and the whole wire fried from the alternator to the ignition. I guess it was a short somewhere but with a new alternator, getting rid of the complicated external regulator wiring, it has been fine.
