Dash Cover Fitting

I have installed a new dash cover on my 1970 and just completed the new wood dash parts. Now I am ready for the re-install of the components. I am having a difficult time installing the dash center trim panel. It will not fit in the same location with the new dash cover on and therefore does now allow me to screw in the controls and in general get the fit right. I could cut the dash cap down to the original dash in that one place but I am concerned it would look like a hack. I am looking for advice on what the "right" thing to do is. Advice please. Thanks!

I have done many of the dash cover installs. I always fit the original center pieces and shave the glove box door and the instrument panel to fit

I undersatand trimming the glove box and the instrument cluster but how do you "fit" the center plastic trim piece. the top and bottom do not have enough material to trim. Do you cut the dash cap???
