Tach errors

My 71 runs fine but my tach when working is always well below estimated rpm. Sometimes it fails to register at all but generally starts working after driving a while but never seems accurate. Any suggestions as to how to troubleshoot? Where does the tech gets its signal? Thanks for any advice.

Where does the tech gets its signal?
negative pin on the coil.

Thanks. I will try cleaning the connection at the coil. I have a lot of spare gauges, but no spare tach.
