Door Chime Relay.

Post by niro884 »

Does anybody know where the door chime relay is installed? Is it the same as the seatbelt chime? Does it work both?

Thanks

On early cars, the chime is located behind the instrument cluster. It is the black box on the right in this photo. I don't think it uses an external relay. I'll ask an expert on Saturday at Pocono.

on a '78 or newer, you need to look on the relay panel which bolts under the glove box

hey, no problem.

So, did you find it?

original owners thought they were a bother...and depending on what style was installed, they may have been correct. the stock buzzer on my wife's '78 was still on the car, but disconnected. when i reconnected it i understood why. it was an obnoxious BUZZZZzzzz that seemed to vibrate the entire dash. you did one of three things with this buzzer. a)took the keys out right away b)kept the doors shut whenever possible c) disconnected the buzzer.

later models used a much smaller chime, about the same size as a relay. i call it the tinkle bell, because that is what it sounds like to me. much less annoying, and almost pleasant.

some original owners disconnected the circuit at the ignition switch, some disconnected the buzzer, and some just pulled the buzzer and threw it in the trash.

i would recommend NOT hooking up the large annoying buzzer, but finding and installing a tinkle bell. i bought mine at http://www.midwest124.com for a very modest price. Tell Jon i said you want a tinkle bell, and he will know what you mean.
