Hello All,
Am I missing something here?
I looked through my Brooklands book and changing these fluids seems too simple.
Unscrew the filler, unscrew the drain. Watch out for hot fluid.
Drain for a while, then refill to the bottom of the filler screw.
That's it? And people pay for this?
Thanks,
CCucchi

Re: Transmission and Gear Oil Change
Just be sure to use the right oils. Regular gear oil in the rear end, GL1 in transmission.

Re: Transmission and Gear Oil Change
Thanks everyone.
I bought the fluids yesterday after going through various threads/opinions.
I settled on Royal Purple 75w90 and Redline MT90.
Now I just need some warmer weather - wet snow yesterday...

Re: Transmission and Gear Oil Change
Finally getting these fluids changed, tomorrow.
From Royal Purples website:
"Max Gear is recommended for use in truck and automotive front or rear differentials, manual transmissions and lower gear units of marine engines that specify use of an API GL-5 or GL-4 fluid. It is non-corrosive to soft yellow metals (brass, bronze, copper, etc.) and synchronizer safe. Specially designed to extend gear and bearing life, Max Gear provides superior corrosion protection over competing conventional and synthetic gear oils."
Started sweating it's use in the last couple of days.

Re: Transmission and Gear Oil Change
It's not just the bearings you need to watch out for. The GL1 is VERY sticky.

Re: Transmission and Gear Oil Change
Here's an interesting read about gear oil, EP and what it does to yellow metals, though it's talking about a Corvair transmission.

I still went with the GL-1 though...
