Clutch replacement: what else while I'm there?

Post by jdeight »

Winter project is going to be replacing the clutch on my '80 Spider. Sounds like I should replace rear main seal and input shaft bearing at the same tome. Anything else I ought to plan tackle while I'm there?

The diagnosis is that my clutch is fried, which I've determined because I can't stay in gear, particularly when accelerating uphill. Engine stays in 3rd, shifting to 4th does nothing.

Depending on miles, I would look at the "donut" and the u-joints.

Depending on your budget, I'd give some thought to installing a light-weight flywheel while you're there. The guys who've installed them all swear that they love how much faster that the engine revs.

I second the vote on a starter. Put in one of the small and light weight gear reduction starters - I think Mark has them. I love mine.
A little off target but how are your motor mounts? A new donut is a good move if the old one has any wear. Change the trany oil (with the proper GL5 as I recall) if it needs it.

I'll agree, good time to replace the starter and the flywheel is a great upgrade; it's "free" performance without sacrificing driveability

nobody mentions far more important and cheap parts that are otherwise unaccesible...

Just to wrap everything up: I finally finished this job. I ended up replacing the flexible driveshaft joint/guibo, rear main seal (and holder, after I broke the original replacing the first seal), gasket, throw out bearing, clutch plate, disc, pilot bearing, clutch fork boot... Maybe other stuff?

So, why am I taking the time to tell you that I successfully replaced my clutch?

Heck, I'm telling EVERYONE!

Replace the Center Driveshaft Support Bearing while you are at it.
