Valve spring compression tool

I've got my head off to chase down a coolant leak and want to address a valve seal leak when I'm at it.

I borrowed an OHC valve spring compressor from Parts Source but it won't quite pull the springs enough to loosen the valve from its seat. I wonder if its made for American or Japanese cars with longer springs.

Any suggestions? Was there a specialty tool? Is there a workaround? I'm sooooooo close but can't more forward unless I can loosen the keepers from the valves stem to drop the valves.

I assume the tool you are using is the type similar to a "G clamp". If so, put a washer or other type of spacer between the valve face and the tool, it will give you a bit more spring compression.

Unfortunately not -- it's not a G clamp. It just fits on the spring side only. Basically it looks like this, though the actuator is different:

There are two j "hooks" that fit below the coil of the spring, and then two legs that fit against the spring seat. I guess I need another type...

I had one like yours and couldn't make it work. Then I bought one like Fiatfactory shows and it was a breeze.

I don't think what you have will work - at least with our engines.

I have the one in fiatfactory,s picture and have used it for years quite happily on my spider and previous coupes with no problems at all; apart from the small handle,but that's easy to work around.

Thanks guys. Turns out I can pick one up for CA$60.

To get the keepers out I just used a socket and a BFhammer, wearing safety glasses, of course. Something soft under the head prevented damage to the valves.

That tool would be required to get the valves and keepers back in. Turns out I bought a new (old) head with back boxes and valves already fitted.

Yes that works great, except on Exhaust 4, where some gussets in the cam box (around the disty spot) cause interference. I ground a tiny bit off of a couple of the edges of it and it then it fits perfectly in that troublesome spot. There is a thread somewhere here on the forum about that. Some folks say that you can just put the tool in backwards in that location and use it as is. I haven't tried that. But the tool works and is a good one.

Shop Manual section 101.01, page 10-47/48

"Using a straight edge, check head for distortion. Lay straight edge across diagonals of gasket surface and lengthwise in the middle. The gap between head and straightedge must not exceed 0.002 inch. If gap exceeds this, reface cylinder head gasket surface"

Thanks again for your help with my questions. When I removed the heads, I thought maybe I’ll mark the valve caps for indentation (valve cap one, two etc). but they all looked the same, so I thought nay there all the same, so now I’m screwed. LOL
