Alternator Knock?

A few days ago my 76 Spider developed what I thought was a rod knock. I'm a total noob to this so I wasnt sure what the noise was or exactly where it was coming from. So I started the engine today and poked around a bit and found that if I put my hand on the back of the alternator, the noise goes away. Nothing is loose or missing. Anyone else ever had this happen, or know what the problem is.
The noise is very similar to a rod knock which I am very familiar with unfortunately.

If you don't already have one purchase a mechanics stethoscope that you can poke around in different areas to find the source of the noise.

Sounds like either the alternator bolt is lose, or the mounting brackets are lose or broken.

There was a nut on the heat shield that was damaged. The nut felt tight but was not making contact with the shield.
I replaced the nut and all is well.
