Gangsta Lean Question

Post by davery »

So last spring I noticed the my drivers seat had that familiar gangsta lean. I took the seat apart and tried to find someone to weld a brace, not couldn't find any takers. I tried to bend it back and it seemed to work, but it's back to the lean again. I could try and find a new seat back, but it will probably happen again. Are there any long term solutions?

strengthening the seat frame is the only long term solution. Then, get out of the car to raise/lower the top rather than twisting in the seat

Unfortunately, I learned the raise/lower top thing too late. So it seems by the time I buy new foam bottoms, new leather and a new bottom seat frame it's gonna cost me $1000 on these seats. As much as I want to stay original, it may be time to look at a seat swap.

What do you think the chances are of finding a seat with a good frame and cushion? I doubt any 30-35 year old seat has a good cushion. I would still need to buy the covers ($650) and other seat cushion($100).

A member here just welded up a new stronger seat back frame himself. Cheaper than the $2,500 or so per seat you see quoted for new correct leather ones. The bottom frames are available for about $50 however I have not seen the seatback frame for sale.

I had mine redone, front and back, for $900, my choice of materials, full custom, not slipcovers, including some frame repair done by the upholsterer's shop. Not pocket change, but you don't have to spend $2500.

Nice Seats. I wasn't quoting $2500. Buying the leather replacement covers and doing the work myself was around $1000. I am currently trying to do some seat repair. If this doesn't work (and I don't think it will) my next move is to take the seats to a few upholsters and get estimates.

$1000 sounds right. I had this done in the dead of Winter (slow month for my upholsterer) and paid cash.

I bought seat covers (front and rear seat) from World upholstery for $650 and covered them my self. Turned out good, look good.

there are lots of options other than leather. Unless the foam and covers are trashed there isn't a need to replace them when doing a frame repair

The leather is starting to crack and the the seat cushion is 30 years old. The seat cushion has compressed to the point the seat cover will not stay on, as it is held in place by the upward pressure of the cushion.
