rebuilding drive shaft

Post by BammBamm »

My carrier bearing was bad so I got that and two new universals. Is there anything I should tell the drive line shop when i take it to them? What should I look for as issues?

The driveshaft is off so you may want to replace the flex joint (guibo) if it's over 5 years old. Look for weights on the driveshaft or cleaner spots where they may be missing. Most of the time the weights are there with the indication that the shaft was balanced at the factory therefore no need to repeat the procedure.
Whenever i get work done on my car my intention is also to eliminate leaks. Pinion seal? Yoke seal? check.
It's obvious that it's a no-brainer but ask the technician if he remembered to grease the new u-joints. Can't trust anyone and i've seen worse.
Other than that there shouldn't be anything else.

The flex joint is new too. It has welded balance plates but what i did notice it the drive shaft is covered with undercoating from original dealership. Do you think it will effect balance?

Depends on how heavy the coating is and if they only coated it on one side. Poor job to not wrap the exhaust and drive shaft or not at least use a piece of cardboard to shield them when spraying on an undercoating. A good drive shaft shop will strip and refinish the shafts.

make sure you mark the 2 sections of drive shaft so they are reassembled in the same alignment.

Just replaced the center support bearing, u-joints, and giubo this autumn. My only contribution to the discussion is to note that I read somewhere (probably here) that there can be interference from the u-joints' grease nipples - that they can get broken off. I haven't had that problem, as there is enough clearance when the drive shaft spins.
