Differential rebuild -- holding the pinion still

I'm rebuilding a torque tube differential, it's more or less the same as the pumpkin style diff.
To re-assemble I need to tighten the pinion nut to crush the sleve and set the pinion rolling torque. So, with the diff out of the car how do I keep the pinion from moving when I torque the pinion nut to crush the crush sleeve?

If you still have the brake discs on the axles, you could try what I did: padded quik clamps on each side's brake disc, snugged up against the brake shields. Held it nice and tight while I torqued it down....
