Best oil for my transmission - answer from Shell

Post by spiderdan »

So I got a buddy that works for Shell in Montreal. The discussion came up on what was best to use in my 68 transmission?
In 2002, the acquisition of Pennzoil-Quaker State Company by Shell Oil Company, was completed. In May 2003, Pennzoil-Quaker State Company began doing business as SOPUS Products. So who better to ask?
He asked me to send him an e-mail detailing factory specs and he would send it to one of their experts.
This is what I sent him...

From my owners manual (I have the original)
Lubricants Transmission:
Fiat Designation "W 90 M" - International designation "SAE 90 EP oil meets MIL-L-2105 B requirements".
What some guys are using here, if they can find it:
Pennzoil Syncromesh GL1, Quaker State Syncromesh and Redline MT90.

This is the response I got...
"As for the transmission, generally in the past 90 EP was SAE 90 GL-4. But now they are adding MIL-L-2105 B it is confusing because usually this spec is associated with GL-5 spec. If it was my car, I would use Morlina S3 BA 220 or Rotella T1 SAE 50"

550019878 - Rotella T1 50 (CF/CF-2) - 1*18.9L - $119.76 Cdn
550026692 - Morlina S3 BA 220 - 1*55ugl - $1,203.40 Cdn
550026650 - Morlina S3 BA 220 - 1*5ugl - $113.41 Cdn

I guess I'm going to order a jug of Morlina

Ask anyone who knows anything about oils and they'll recommend an EP oil for all kinds of reasons. Then you use the stuff and it just screws up the Spider transmission to no end. Illogical perhaps, but the good old jug of NAPA gear oil, non-EP, works perfectly.

It would seem that Morlina S3 BA 220 is non-EP

Don't know about the Rotella T1 50. Unable to find EP or non-EP data on the web.

I'm sorry, excuse me for my ignorance if i'm missing the point on something here. I'm no expert on oils but a little research reveals to me that Morlina and Rotella should not even be used in the same sentence, not even as baby names suggestions.
They are both for different applications entirely. Stay away from Morlina for your transmission, it's definetely loaded with extreme pressure additives.
On the other hand Rotella 50 monograde is a motor oil and motor oils do not carry these additives.

My mistake, sorry, the S4B series have the EP additives. Confusing, Morlina seems to have a wide range of applications, some with, some without.

I'll admit I'm not as much of a gear head as a lot of you, but I have managed to keep my car running, mostly on my own, for 39 years.
Always use GL 1 (mineral oil) and have not had a single issue in that time.

Is there a reason to reinvent the wheel that I'm not aware of?

Not trying to reinvent the wheel John.
I would love to use GL 1 mineral oil but as they say "Unobtainium in these parts".

Unless someone can chine in who knows where I can purchase any brand of GL1 in Ontario or Quebec. I would hate to ship a jug of it from the US with our current Cdn $ value.

Cross the border and find a UAP store usually they have GL1 in stock. I bought mine in Newport Vermont. 40 miles from Sherbrooke.

The cost of a gallon was like $20 or less

I will ignore the "experts" at Shell and go with the experts here.
I will try a few tractor suppliers that are on the way to the cottage. UAP/NAPA around here don't seem to stock GL1 and without a stock # are pretty much useless. Their behind the counter "experts" (read pimply kid half as old as my Spider) then try to sell me something supposedly "just as good".
If no luck with the tractor suppliers, I will get in touch with Bert in Edmonton. I'm sure he can provide me with his suppliers' name and stock #. Figure if it's available there, it should be available somewhere around here.
Thanks to FS experts for the leads.

I tried every source I could think of from coast to coast, including a number of tractor/farm equipment suppliers in Sask. but to no avail. And of course many outlets tried to convince me another product was equal...until they acknowledge they had to idea what non EP really meant. After about 3 months of trying I finally gave up and brought it in from the US.
