Ignition Module Blue Wire

Post by chico »

So the question I have is what is the purpose of the ignition module relay Thermo Switch 18/4? Started cleaning up wires and I changed the point system to an electronic ignition so I'm not using the factory ignition module anymore and I'm trying to figure out which wires I can remove from the existing module, seems as if all the wires should be able to be removed but this thermos switch by the carb has the last blue wire and I'm not sure it's purpose. Thanks in advance Rob :D [ Thanks in advance Rob :D

There is no module on cars with points ignitions. That is an ignition MODE relay. It was for emissions. To pass emissions the base timing was retarded to 0 degrees, but the car would harly run when cold, so Fiat installed another set of points, advanced by 10 degrees.
The car would start on the advanced set of points then when the coolant temp reached a certain temperature the relay would switch to the more retarded set of points. You can eliminate the system and run with just one set of points. I recommend you time it at 10 degrees BTDC.

My vehicle absolutely will not start under hot start conditions on the running points. It will start fine on the starting points under hot start conditions. I tested this by jumping the brown wire to the green and black on the ignition mode relay socket. The relay works, the thermo switch under the manifold works, both sets of points get current when they are supposed to. Any ideas? That pertronix kit is real nice, I have it, but it will only run at 10 BTDC and California emissions laws require the car be timed at 0 degrees.

One last thing, Can you please tell me if the oil pressure switch has anything to do with the ignition mode in the dual points ignition? The reason I ask is because
according to the official FIAT North American factory workshop manual, on page 55-14, under warm engine conditions the oil pressure switch is supposed activate the starting points, and then deactivate the starting points; via the ignition mode really once sufficient oil pressure is reached. this is what the manual says but every schematic I've looked at doesn't even have the oil pressure switch in the circuit.

I am not overly familiar with the Fiat emissions how ever from the wire diagram I believe the thermo switch is a time delayed switch. Current passing through the switch causes the switch contacts to change position. In this application after a certain amount of time after the car's ignition switch has been in the "start or run" position the switch changes contacts and engages the relay to change to the run set of points. If you would like to remove the switch I believe you need to keep the pink and gray/red wires connected together. So the idle stop solenoid has power going to it.

The wire diagram posted on Mirafiori for a 1978 Spider does not show the oil pressure switch in the dual point system. It only shows the switch controling the low oil pressure warning light.

Thanks very much for the info. I just slapped on a pertronix ignitor kit and the problem is solved.
