Seat Belt Replacement

Post by Richard240 »

Does anyone have a source for new seatbels for my 1981 Spider 2000? I found some universal sets but only in black. I need Fiat maroon/burgandy or close.

The original ones are very faded and plastic is badly deteriorated.

Seatbelt Planet has them for Spiders, I assume they have different colors. The price is ~$230.

My vote goes to seatbeltplanet.com as well... I just received mine a few weeks ago and they fit perfect. Just be sure to save all your original hardware as they only come with the belts/mechanism. They install the same exact way as the originals but be sure to ask for the Spider specific set. As of when I placed my order they did not have it listed on there site and I ordered a universal kit through their website and luckily I had changed my mind with the receiver side where the belt clicks into.

I had originally ordered the same exact length as the factory one which is 12" with a 9". I decided to go with the 9" because I'm 6'3" and have the seat all the way back and the 12" seems to protrude to much and I didn't like the look of that much showing. When I called back the following day to switch them out I got a guy named Steve and while chatting I mentioned they were for a Fiat Spider, he took a look at the order and told while what I ordered would work he actually had a direct kit that would work better and he switched out the original order for the kit that was specifically designed for the Spider.

I actually got around to installing it just last week and it fit perfect! He told me he was working on getting it on the website so who knows, maybe it's listed by now. Here is the part number if you need it #510110 and I also ordered new bolt caps as mine were originally blue and I switched to black. I'm not sure they have maroon but you could always ask... Hope that helps!

At long last got the retractable shoulder belt sets from http://www.seatbeltplanet.com installed:

I also worked with Steve last NOV, and he asked me to send the diagonal measurement from the rear mounting point ion the inner wheel well down to the belt anchor point on the outboard side of the cockpit (at the left rear of the driver seat). I installed them today (see post in Restoration) and I'm really pleased with how well they work. As I expected, one must be smooth and easy with pulling the belt out (the retractor locks are sensitive in this orientation), but they rode comfortably. I'm using the black plastic shoulder belt guides from one of the vendors, but may decide to opt for the metal ones as a partial upgrade.

I would definitely NOT choose the solid plastic holsters again. My mistake entirely; should have gone (and will probably retrofit) cable mounts for the inboard belt receivers. Between the new (slightly wider) console, and the refilled/upholstered seats, it's pretty tight on the inboard sides of the seats.

Definitely recommend seatbeltplanet. Steve knows his stuff, and they ship fast.

I paid $210 for 4 belt sets: two rear (extra long to hold down golf clubs and Martin Guitars!), and two front 3 way belt sets. My fronts were special order because of the change to the inertia reel system to all angles from vertical only. Snap a pic of the original installation, contact Steve, and send him a copy. He'll help you figure out the solution for your car.

Note to early car owners: I had to modify the outer rear trim panels to allow the retractors to fit in the factory mounting points. Once the top is back and installed, I'll post some pix of the process and the mods. For now, the panels are back in, unsecured, to make sure the new speakers fit (Blaupunkts with blue poly cones...yeah..more blue). Top frame comes home this week.
