Radiator sizes through the B & C 124 Spiders

Post by chrisg »

I can't believe I'm asking this, but alas I really am....are the later '70s radiators wider than the early ones? I'm asking because I sold a radiator to a local guy who is getting a nice '74 back on the road. My recollection from owning a couple '74s was that the radiator in those was the same in overall dimensions as that in the earlier (like '71 or '72) Spiders/Coupes (B series), so I picked out the best spare I had which I believe was from a '73 (CS1). He finally got around to mounting it and he said the upper mounting studs on his '74 are about 3/4" farther apart than the radiator allows....does this sound right?

Chris,

'74s may be weird - mine had a smaller radiator than the later 1800s, so I assume it was the same size as the 1400/1600 rad, but I have heard from several people that they are larger than those. So maybe it was a one year only size?
Or maybe they changed from the 1400/1600 size to the 1800 size mid year? Not sure.

mid-year change makes sense...I asked him the build date & it's 9/74 whereas both '74s I have 1st hand experience with were either late '73 or early '74 builds..guess it's off the the 'wanted' section...

A build date of 9/74 would make it a 1975 model year.
