Auxiliary Shaft

Post by nonmilagno »

Installing timing belt on my 80FI Spider. Got the old belt off, doing some general cleaning in the area and inadvertantly moved the auxiliary shaft, not sure which direction, the alignment hole is now at the bottom. The cam wheels and crankshaft are still in the correct positions. Can I simply rotate the aux shaft alignment hole back to the one o'clock position (either direction)?

Sorry if this question seems simple, but this is my first Spider and I'm just getting to know this engine.

Yep, turn it back to line up with the bolt in the tensioner spring.

Always pointed at the bolt.

And whatever you do, hand turn the engine before you crank it up. Taking the plugs out will help.

On fuel injection engines is the aux shaft's only function to drive the oil pump?

Yes. On carb engines, it also drives the fuel pump. And in the original engines, it drove the distributor.

Yes BUT it still has the lobe on the end.
Many at time of engine overhaul will cut the lobe off and then plug the oil galley. Never any worries then of interference with #2

Timing belt and water pump done, ran engine, all is well. Removed A/C components, including compressor mounting bracket. Have to admit I was a bit surprised to see oil coming from the mounting holes in the engine block on start-up. I didn't realize the holes went all the way through to the crankcase. No worries though, I put the bolts back in the holes and no more leaks. I need to find the correct plugs for this. Metric pipe plug?

Now if I can just get all the air out of the radiator, etc. I'll be ready to drive.

Many here have installed a water filler "T" on the heater hose to fill and purge air.

Other way to make sure the air is out is to raise the front end up and take the rad cap off and let the car run for ten minutes or so. If there is air in the system it will burp and fart and when all the air is out you'll see the coolant in the rad flowing one side to the other. Top up and good to go.
ONE thing I sometime forget is to OPEN the heater valve as well before starting.
