To my knoledge it is original.
I hope someone can show me details about the leather (the mounting and the "hold-down" mechanism.
Kind regards from Germany

its been a long time, but from what i remember it was held down by elastic straps from below, it moves with the lever by the lever pushing up on it and the elastic straps holding it against the lever

That is correct. Mine was the same and I simply removed it.
and here's the most common problem with the sewn consoles:

Wait, did some consoles come sewn from the factory?
Like this for instance? (i figured this was a previous owner job, just curious though)
Also, in front of the heater controlls, there are two openings. What are they for? In the image pictured there is a switch in the rear one, and the front one is empty.

Hi MrJD
Wait, did some consoles come sewn from the factory?
Yes they are factory made.
The openings are for the "ventilator"-Symobl (wich is lighted with a fibreglascable like the heater controls).
i added a photo of mine (original). The Center Console shown in the picture is not original.
A metal plate was mounted (glued) on top. mine is already covered again.I added also a photo/ sketch of the metal plate.

p.s. My "ventilator"-symbol was missing to, i found it during the demount of the center console.
