Possible transmission bearing question

Post by TX82FIAT »

Folks, I've read a few other threads about transmissions and I'm having an issue similar to some in the past. The car is making a lower friction noise when in neutral no clutch depressed. When I depress the clutch the noise goes way. I have the right amount of travel in clutch pedal. This noise has appeared a couple days after I took the front off jack stands. I had the car on two jack stands at the front two jacking points with a hydrolick lift under the front crossmember for about two weeks. during that time I installed a new Idler arm and all is well with the stearing and clearances. Ths weekend i took her for the first drive after sitting on level ground for a couple days. This is when i noticed the transmission noise for the first time. It is unlikely that a bearing such as the neadle bearing or something else with input shaft ort lay shaft would have an issues because the car was up on jack stands with some support under cross member.

I looked at the cross member and the common cracked crossmember is not present. crossmember looks fine.

it is a little cold, Could it be I need some time for the 90 wt GL1 to warm up and splash back into areas where it will lubricate the bearings? Having the car in the garage on jack stands at about a 15 degree angle for a couple weeks might have caused the GL1 to move to the back of the trans. I only drove it about four miles on the test drive, barely enought time for it to get hot.

Is it possible something shifted slightly when I hade the car on jacks between the motor and trans creating a little more friction in an area.

Thoughts, not sure if a bearing will just go without building up to a louder noise. The sound was definitely not there before I parked the car.

I am no expert, but if the engine and trans were bolted together, I agree with you that jacking the car would not have caused any bearing damage. Did you removed the shifter boot or center console? That would increase noise level.

I notice when the temp is cold (30 F for days), the GL1 is pretty thick. On mine, when it's that cold, even with the shifter in neutral, when I let the clutch out, it loads the engine and wants to lerch a little, but doesn't do that after it warms up. I can't say it's noisier though when cold ( & having been on level ground). After you drove it, did it shift pretty easy, or was the GL1 still so thick it made shifting heavy? How cold of a temperature was it outside? If it was still really heavy, I might let it fully warm up and see what it sounds like.

Got under the car today and saw a slight drip from the trans drain plug. I had filled it last year so I opened the fill plug and added GL1 90 wt non ep. It took well over a quart. The noise died down a little but is still there. No issues shifting. Only time any issues with trans when shifting into first from a stop.
