Creepy crawly in Portland, Oregon
Hello folks,
When I was a young dazed teenager one of my fondest memories was driving late on weeknights in my friend's little red spider and getting into too much trouble. I hadn't thought much about these cars in the intervening years and became very involved in Italian motorbikes and still scoot around on a bevel drive Ducati twin and a tattered Moto guzzi that is an indestructible farm implement. Anyway, a couple of months ago, I saw an ad for a 78 spider up in Washingon, and on a whim drove up on a weekday (playing hookey again) to check it out. I met a great guy who was the original devoted owner who took loving car of the beast. He possessed all the original paperwork and literally folders of reciepts on it. I purchased the car that day and am so stoked to drive a car again that feels and connects with the driver not so unlike a motorbike. Through the years of automatic transmissions and cars that have been just functioning cages to get to point A and B; this car is a revelation and a delight. For some reason I assumed that cars were a lost cause as far as sensory pleasure goes. Am I making any sense? I came upon your forum and just thought it would be great to share this with you folks. I just hope I am worthy enough to take as great care of this car as the previous owner did. The car presently has 204,000 miles on the original motor and the first clutch was replaced at 175,000 miles. Everything on the car is stock and original with many mechanical parts replaced and a repainting about 3 years ago; the compression is good and it doesn't smoke or leak. I realize I will have to rebuild the motor at some point, but in the meantime I'm just going to enjoy it. I am grateful for finding this site and of course I have a 36 ADL that I would love to install in it sometime and could probably use some advice on that. Thanks and cheers, Pablo

Welcome to the forum!
The car looks AMAZING for a +200K car. I've actually never heard of any other fiat spider with that kind of miles on it. I really liked the idea of the original owner driving it as much as he did and keeping it in as good as shape as it looks.

Welcome to the forum Pablo. Hear you loud and clear on the Spider driving experience. I also drove motorcycles for many years, mostly Goldwings, but back in 1980 I had an 850 Motto Guzzi. Now days my bike is neglected in favor of the Spider. Glad you chanced upon this forum, and you'll be very pleased with the help and shared knowledge you'll get from it.

Looks very nice, Pablo!! I'm sure you will get lots of enjoyment from driving this one. There is a gathering of Fiat enthusiasts each year in southern Oregon (July time frame), camping at a lake near Medford for a weekend. You may want to keep that in mind. I believe that there is a regular group in your area that gets together often for events.
BTW, Jim, 200K+ miles on a spider is really not that unusual. You saw at least 2 last weekend (mine at almost 210K miles, and Gary Poage at 250K+ miles). Pablo's is certainly one of the nicest around with that many miles!

Beautiful looking spider. The chrome/stripe on the wheel arches, you have more pics of what's going on there? is that a vinyl stripe, or it is chrome or what?
Re: Creepy crawly in Portland, Oregon
thanks so much for your response and inspiration. Today was a gorgeous day (it usually rains for a 3 to 4 month stretch, but the summers are amazing) and the car feels great. Danno, those are chrome arch strips that the previous owner said he had installed with the wheel well liners. I have never seen them on other spiders; I'll ask him where he sourced them from; I'll post a close up photo also. I rarely have seen the chrome strips at the running board location and he said that was an option when he bought the car new in california-not sure if that part works so well; but I'm going to leave it as is at the moment.
