i've got a nice replacemnt shift lever i'd like to install, but i'm concerned about damaging the shift linkage taking it off. anybody got a cool trick to get it popped off?

Do you mean the chrome extension or the entire lever? I removed the extension by using needle nose pliers to pull out the nylon retaining clip (it will destroy the clip so a new one has to be used to replace the extension). I believe the entire lever can be unbolted from the transmission by removing the console to access to components.

Just went through it. Anything with an "L" shaped piece of metal will work. Screwdrivers were a PITA for me but many other people used them. My teflon ring came off just with minor scratches using a small wrench with an "L" shape (don't know the proper name of the tool, looks like a bottle opener). Once the ring is off just pull the chrome lever and it will pops out from the main gearshift lever.

awesome info - that was super easy! I'd gotten info before that you just yank it off, but that didn't seem to work - this just took me 5 minutes to install a shiny shift lever that i've had for years. thanks again for the info!
