Score mark on cylinder wall

Post by bran100 »

I got my block back from the machine shop, bored .40 over and I'm noticing a light score on one of the walls. It's not deep, but I can feel it with my finger. Should I bring it back to get honed again?

that's a nice example of half-assed job. that engine will consume oil from new and honing will only help partialy

Measure how far down it is before you panic. But yes, not a sign of good workmanship.

Care to elaborate? The sensationalism doesn't help me resolve anything.

Next step would be to measure the bores. If they are round, and not too worn, you could clean up the area with some emory cloth and live with a little oil consumption. Compare that to the cost of having it machined oversize, and the cost of replacing the pistons.

They did measure the new .40 over pistons, and matched the bores to the pistons. They weren't happy with the variances from top to bottom on the new cast pistons, but they're confident they got the bores dialed in. My thought was that some rookie at the shop dragged the honing tool across that area in some odd way. I have the block in the trunk of my car, hoping to drop off again today to smooth that section out.

Thanks for the info.
