Engine won't turn over after stalling

Post by rebelmp »

Hey all. I've got a 78 spider. Just bought it 4 days ago. Replaced the spark plugs on day 1. And it got a brand new optima red top battery this afternoon. It starts just fine, and runs great, but, once it stalls out a couple times, the car won't start up again. It sounds like the bsttery is almost dead, and the engine smells fai tly like burnt rubber between the carb and the windshield. If I let it sit for half an hour, it cranks right back up and works great till trying to restart aftdr a stall.

The guy I bought it from was upront about everything (told me all the bad things before I bought it) and told me the starter and alternator were in great shape, so now I'm not sure what the heck it could be. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Is the engine turning over? It could be a bad starter or solenoid that can't handle the heat. Or it could be a loose connection on the starter. I would start by ensuring that the connections on the starter are tight.

I would also suggest checking the connections.
Check out a post called "dragging starter" in the electrical section.
This talks about a missing ground wire.
When one was added from the starter to the frame, all was good.

You might pull the battery and see if it is really weak or not.
If it is drained, then you have either a bad battery or an
excessive load.
A high load could be from many things but most likely the starter.

But a burnt smell could be from either a loose connection or
a high load.

Sorry for the rambling, using my phone.
Good luck and let us know what you find.

Hey guys, wanted to get on and say thank you. Had some real life things come up so this is on hold for a few more days, but thanjs for the ideas. Aalso got suggested it could be the solenoid or vapor lock somewhere. Either way, as soon as I get time to find it, ill let you guys know.

Sounds like the idle solenoid (ICU) in the carb. I had the same issue and it was an easy fix. Stalls when at temperature (190 or so) then fires right up once the engine cools back down.

Initial timing too advanced will induce s hot crank issue. Pull the coil wire, if it cranks hot the it was the timing
