Hi all,
Love my "new" 81 spider with FI. Having a random issue that I could use some advice and guidance on.
The engine will occasionally shut off while driving down the highway or street. All the electricals are fine. I will pull over, wait 5 or so minutes, and she will start right back up. When trying to turn it over, its like fuel is not making it to the engine.
The following items have been replaced recently yet the problem persists:
Fuel Filter
Distributor Cap/Rotar
Plugs
Fuel Sender
Battery
Cooling hoses
In reading several posts - it sounds like I might have either a relay problem, fuel pump problem, or something in the injectors. Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

listen closely when it wont start to see if the fuel pump is running. may be something as simple as the fuel pump ground is loose. could also be the start of a failing dual relay

Re: Now I'm Running, Now I'm Not
I had an issue with my 81 where, like yours, it would randomly shut off while driving. It was generally (but not exclusively) associated with putting on the blinkers. Advice on this forum led me to the ignition switch. I moved the circuits off the ignition switch onto relays (also could have replaced the switch) and everything now works great.
At the time my electricals looked great too. Unless you can verify them when the car won't run I wouldn't necessarily give them a clean bill of health.

My '82 did that until it finally quit altogether; turned out to be the injector side of the double rely was bad.

Hey all,
To close this one out - it was the dual relay for the fuel pump/fuel injector.
By the looks of it - the relay may have been original equipment - and was showing distress in the housing.
Was able to get one locally same day - turns out the dual relay used in the spider was also used in 79 - 81 BMW 528i, 633i and 733i. The local BMW guys had one in stock.
Just finished up a relaxing cruise with no interruptions.. Heaven!
