Not an early riser?

Post by NSFIAT »

Just wondering if anyone might be able to trouble shoot the following 'issue'?

If the car has been sitting for a long time (12-24 hours) I'll run into this 'issue' after the engine turns over. Everything sounds fine and it seems to idle at a decent RPM, but when I give it gas the RPM will drop and the engine will almost stall. If I let it run for a minute or so the RPM won't drop when the gas pedal is depressed and everything is fine. If the car hasn't been sitting for a long time I won't run into this issue at all . . .

Apart from this the car runs like a champ. I'd just like to work this kink out in case it decides to turn into something worse . . .

sounds like the choke isn't working. Have you removed the air cleaner top to verify the choke closes with a cold engine?

Haven't had a chance to work on the car, just coming back to this now. Any chance it could be the Auxiliary Air Regulator?

Its an '81 FI. Took the AAR off of a spare head I have and cleaned it out with carb cleaner before hitting it with heavy duty penetrating oil. Buffed some of the crud off of the exterior, cleaned the electrical contacts and hooked it up. The engine turned over and idled like a champ. Problem solved!

I did some digging through older posts in the forum and found similar issues. Its a fantastic community - definitely happy to have this as a resource and participate!

AAV question: My car will absolutely not start with the AAV disconnected when cold, even when ambient temperature outside is 80F. This strikes me as odd, I would expect that it would eventually catch? Does this make sense to you tuning knowledgeable folks?
