For smoothness and economy: FI
For making it faster later: Carb

Sounds like you need two Fiat spiders....

The FI cars are great, smooth, usually trouble free not too difficult to figure out if something should act up. There are a few mods that will give it more zip for sure but to get the most out of the engine the dual down drafts, engine and head work will give plenty of power. Saying that though, I believe some have gone to an after market injection system and now have plenty of power.. Just money eh..
Personally, I like the combination of a bit more power with added handling improvements. These cars love to go around corners fast...

the word is you will have to put some serious cash into a carbed motor to make it has fast as an FI.

I have been driving different Opels and the Fiat now with Bosch L and LE Jetronics for more than 20 Years now and they did not let me down a single time.

I love the FI for it's trouble free nature. There seems to be much higher power potential woth carbs. You need to determine which is more important to you and then you will have an answer that is right for you. If you are looking for a spider in a stock configuration, Fi is a nice way to go.

My 80 FI will pull on level ground in 5th gear from 2000 rpms pretty well. It is quite well behaved.

I have a 82 fuelie and two carbed models. The '82 just sat for 8 months and fired up like it was parked yesterday. The 2.0 has lots of torque, so you can climb hills without revving the piss out of it. I agree that the FI is best for daily driving.
