Fuel pump....again??

Post by ga.spyder »

I spent a frustrtating winter sorting out my fuel injection system.I had a varity of issues, but the main culprit ended up being a tank full of crud, rust, rubber debris,etc...The whole system is new from the fuel cap to the injectors. The car has been running great. My daughter wanted to go for a ride yesterday,so we took about a 1 hour jaunt including a blast up to 100mph  Cruising up my road ,almost home,on the last uphill and it just quit running! No symptoms, funny noises, flames,or smoke. It just died.I coasted backward down the hill to the bottom! Long story short, when you activate the AFM flap, the pump doesnt energize. The wiring all seems intact.I do have a Bosch pump,to replace the ElCheapo thats in there. The question is ,should I be looking for something making the pump burnup? I will check the fuse,etc.. Just a cruel coincedence after my winter of fuel problems? ps...brand new filter, too.

Are you sure the pump is getting power? It could have a blown fuse, bad ground, etc.

Hi Csaba. No,I am not sure.I havent had a chance to check it out yet.It died in a thunderstorm(of course)! I towed it the half mile home and put it in the garage.I hope to check it out tomorrow, and will check those items first. Thanks,Craig

Wow. Not again! I hope it's something small and quick to fix.

My thoughts exactly,Giulio!! The fuel pump definitely isnt energizing when the flap is moved, and was running perfect and just quit. With a completely new fuel system,it is narrowed down to a few things. It is a bit frustrating, though. :(

Craig,
Don't forget that the dual relay is in that circuit, as well.

Take a battery or with long wires from the one in the car, direct wire to the pump... Perhaps start there.

Thanks ,I havent thought of the relay  One of my first homemade Fiat tools in my garage was a set of jumper wires!!! That will absolutely be my first thing to do.I have it up on jackstands and plan to get on it as soon as church is over.Oh,and after Vettel wins the Canadian Grand Prix!!! A man has to have priorities :D

You know Craig, my '81' fuel pump is wired so it bypasses the AFM flap switch. I know it's not correct (and unsafe) and I'm planning to one day wire it correctly, but I've been driving it this way since I bought the car last year and I haven't had any issues with it so far (knock on wood). Could be a temporary solution.

I drove mine like that for the first 2 years I had it.Ron Luxmore guided me thru wiring it correctly.I will find out the issue this afternoon.I really suspect the EL-CHEAPO pump has failed. It was on the car when all the debris in the old tank was running thru my fuel system.

Fuel pump is locked up,as I suspected.I have a used but serviceable Bosch pump that will be going on today.I am in the market for another Bosch pump,as a spare. No more generic pumps for me!

I remember this from years ago.
http://www.international-auto.com/fiat- ... -tanks.cfm

Only thing that would be questioned is a fuel filter between the pump and tank, I believe it is not recommended with the fuel injected system on our car.

Glad you have it sorted. Those pumps are expensive.

Thanks Chris Yes...they are very expensive, but I think I may have to bite the bullet and buy a brand new Bosch pump. The generic pump may have been subjected to some tank debris, before I got it all sorted

One of the mirafiori guys, Richard Ridge, did a write up on a fuel strainer that goes in before the pump, even on an FI car. It's a strainer not a filter, so it won't clog like a filter because it only removes the large chunks that will harm the pump. It's on my to-do list.

Here's the link: http://dcfiats.org/tech/Strainer_Retrofit_article.pdf
