'72 850 spider won't re-start when hot

Post by pshayne »

The car starts great cold. As soon as it warms up, it will not restart. The starter still turns over fine and we can push start it when hot easily enough and then it runs fine. But once it warms up, I can crank it forever and it won't catch or fire at all.

I am new at this and have pretty basic mechanical skills. The timing seems fine and it drives well when started. But it has been a bit embarrassing for the kids to get out and push start if we take it to the grocery store. I would appreciate any clues as to where to start.
Thanks

It'd be a good idea to take a look at the ground strap attached to the starter. Increasing the size will help, as will fixing anything that you see wrong with it.

That worked for me. A couple years ago I was able to push start my 850 single handedly from a running start on a level road. Satisfying as that is, it's much more dignified to just turn the key. Good luck!

Thanks, I will take a look. Starter works fine, it just won't catch.

I'd be curious to know if this solution fixed your problem. I am having the exact same issue with my 1980 Spider 2000. Once it's warm and turned off - I'm stranded until I get a push start.
