69 Spider, No Idle

Post by aleinos »

Yesterday, I tried to start up my 69 spider. The car has been sitting in my garage for the past few months, awaiting restoration. It has a 1.6 and a Weber 32 DIR carb bolted on it. I changed the fuel filter, spark plugs and installed a new electric fuel pump. I wasn't able to get it to idle at all, even after playing with the idle speed screw for a while. It would only run if I give it throttle. Any ideas?

Btw after checking tappet clearances I found out that #2 intake valve clearance is way bigger than the other 3. Just in case that has anything to do with my problem.

If you have a spare condenser, try changing it out and see if that solves the problem

idle jet is probably plugged with varnish. Today's fuel breaks down quickly

Cleaned the idle jet and got it fixed. Guess the 69 is staying for now ;)

Does the fuel break down within a few months? Dang. Ive only been running premium ethanol free for the past year or so. Yesterday i went to fill up and they were out of fuel at the station...and its the only one around.

Idle jets are really prone to pluggin on these. Just general debris from old cars tanks and line. Certainly old gas as well.
Fuel does break down a bit in a few months, but fuel in tank probably not causing any problem, if car was just sitting and everthing dried up in float bowl that will do it right there, dried fuel leave junk.
