For the three years I've owned Bella Limone I've wanted to check the oil in the steering box. But its buried under the booster and the carb and the intake manifold along with hoses and linkages and I couldn't figure out how to reasonably get it done.
So in preparation for pulling my trans to replace the throwout bearing, in order to get to the starter, I pulled all the hoses, lines and linkage to the carb, labeling them along the way. I then found I could see the steering box, but it was covered with thick gunk. A can or so of carb cleaner got it cleaned off enough that I could see the top of it and the square fill plug. I was able to get a 8mm open end wrench on it but there was no way it would budge.
Checking on line I found I wasn't the only one with this issue. The square top of the plug will just round off with conventional sockets. An 8 point 5/16 socket was said to work, but they are impossible to find. So I checked with one of our NJFIATS resident experts, Ralph (lanciahf) who gave me the secret.
Take a 3/8 in. socket, turn it upside down and place the square end on to the fill plug. It’s a little loose, but it will bite. Then, figure out how to connect the upside down socket to an extension then to the rachet somehow. I poked around my meager toolbox and found this 3/8 inch socket driver thing. I don’t know how it got in my box or really what its for, but I found the business end fits tightly into 6mm (1/4 inch) socket. Add a long extension and, voilà, a hard twist and the plug was loose. It rounded it off a little, but next time the 8mm open end will take it right off.
Here’s the pictures. Oh, the mark on the driver socket thing is “H6”.

Just as an FYI,that 8 point socket should be available from Sears. That's where I ordwered mine. Got it in about 2 days. I think it was under $10.00 total, for 3/8" drive. Hope it helps.

They're also available from NAPA and any good parts store, probably on order.

Re: Steering Box Fill Plug Removal
Glad you were able to get the plug out.
I was able to get mine out with a small set of vice-grips.
I then filled the gear box with a small syringe filled numerous times with 90-weight lube.
I was able to do it with all of the hoses and wires still connected in the engine bay (1980 2000 F.I.)

Good idea to check and see if there is any paste in there from metal shavings, if the box had run low on lube. I had to spray mine out with some cleaner and carefully wipe out a whole bunch of pastey gunk before refilling. The payoff was that the steering eased unbelievably! Well worth the maintenance effort!

Dave,
You must have surgeon's fingers, I can't imagine how you got your hand in there.
Pete, I'm just going to top it up. I don't want to pull out the box. I tried using a nylon zip strip as a dip stick, but there's mechanical stuff in there and it won't go to the bottom. I got a little oil showing up on the tip of it, so I know it needs oil. My steering is a little heavy but there's no notchy-ness so I'm hoping I'll see some improvement once there's some fresh oil in there. Just knowing I've checked and added oil will make me feel better.
