Rebuilding 124 Transmission

Post by grrrdot »

OK, I am going to fix the noises coming from my 124 sedan's transmission. I'm not a transmission guru so I need some help diagnosing what parts to replace.
First issue is difficulty shifting into 1st gear when stopped or going slowly. (Synchro?)
Second is a whining noise in every gear but 4th. ( one or more bearings? )
Last is a clattering sound at idle when the car is fully warmed up. The clattering goes away when I push in the clutch or accelerate away. ( no idea?? )

So what parts should I be sourcing?

OK another knee-jerk suggestion... I'd contact either Mark at his shop (Alison's Automotive)or Csaba at auto riciambi. I believe they will both carry the parts you need after a discussion with either about your issues.

Change all your bearings, synchro and check your fork.

Hey,
It's a 4spd.
As far as I know up through 4th gear it's all the same parts as the 5spd?

On any used gearbox I would replace all the synchro rings, their springs, the sliders, and the shiftforks if they show any wear at all. I would inspect the gears and bearings and replace as necessary. If you can afford it just replace them all, so you know it's all new.
Don't forget about the clutch and the pilot bearing in the end of the crank.

Mine does this at slow idle when the engine's cold, in my case it's the clutch rattling until the engine warms up, the revs pick up and the noise stops.

if i were you, i'd start looking for good used lada gearbox, preferably 5 speed. it's a straight bolt on job to your 124, 4 speed requires no mods at all while 5speed needs diferent rubber mount.
in my part of the world good used 5speed will set you back around 200$, while 4 speed is 70-80$.
you could look for one in canadian sites, there's quite a few ladas out there. gearbox from lada Niva (4x4) will do, but it has no speedo sender gear so it would require some fiddling to fit in.
lada gearboxes in general are just about the same quality as fiat 124 gearboxes.

btw, gear ratios are identical, except, naturally, the 5th gear which is 0.82 ratio and will give you more relaxed cruising
