Oil Around Spark Plugs

Post by bobbo52 »

Anyone got a guess as to why there is pools of oil around my spark plugs. I'm thinking that it might be the valve cover gaskets? Just took possion of a 1971 and started a list of things that I want to have done and found this problem.

Leaking cam-cover gaskets is common.... as is spilling oil when adding it.

both would result in oil puddling in the spark plug wells.

I'd clean it out and see if they fill back up!

Oil filler cap's gasket can let oil by. check the gasket and replace if it looks squished/worn...
Same with the cam tower cover gaskets, they can dry out. Easy fix.

Leaving the oil filler cap off and driving around will also cause this.

Thanks for the advice. I will check it all. Got to get new battery before I can get the car started again.

A little late to the party here (as usual), but I noticed a similar issue yesterday: looks to be the oil filler cap.

Cap's seal is fully compressed and hard, anyone know a replacement that works?
