Rough and rich-help
Rough and rich-help
Just getting ready to get my 82 FI back on road (new plugs, wires, rotor cap fuel pump thermo water pump t belt and tensioner)- got it running well except for a predetonation problem. loosened dizzy and attempted to time by ear. also noticed plug on coolant temp sensor bad and replaced sensor. now running really rich and poorly. will getting timing light and setting at 10 btdc fix or what the hell else could i have done.
Re: Rough and rich-help
well, predetonation would be a new one. You either have detonation or pre-ignition, two very different scenarios. The ect sensor connection is critical, if the pigtail is bad or loose, replace it. Timing by ear is not a good repair even if you have an experienced ear. Time it properly. Since you just replaced the belt, I'd bet you have the cam pulleys misaligned. If you have new troubles after a repair, it's always a good idea to retrace your steps and make sure you didn't make a mistake

Thanks for the reply. I don't know the term but it was pinging under throttle. I'm sure I'm close and timing will take care of it as the car was running great and idling well except for slight pinging under accelerlation. Triple checked alignments (crank, cams, aux) when I did t belt. Coolant temp sensor would also seem to make it run rich, but as I said it got replaced. Just checkin for input from all the great folk on the forum for other things to check.
Thanks again

Re: Rough and rich-help
Like Mark said...the connector at the coolant sensore is critical.
Like Mark said timing by ear a bad idea.

Thanks for the info. You're right timing by ear is BAD. Got the light on it and it's purrrring.
After six weeks of going thru everything front to back it's finally ready for a road trip.
Couldn't have done it without the help of the forum
Thanks all
