New carb

Post by BrwnRecluse »

I've been fighting a stumble and stalling problem for the last week. Got obsessed with the car, had less than three weeks and I'm about to go back to work. I work out of town so I won't get to play with it.
Anyway, after refurbishing the ignition system, the carb was the only thing left. I ordered a Weber 32/36 DFEV because It's just about the same thing I use on my Mazda trucks. after pulling the stock carb off,

I cleaned the manifold and replaced some really crappy vacuum plugs from the PO. Then ground the back off the 'knob' for the throttle link and mounted the knob to the new carb with the help of a washer and steel epoxy putty.

Ugly, but it works! I need to thread the rod down a bit more to get all the adjustment I can.
Then realized I had forgotten to order a spacer. Really don't want to miss my last weekend of driving weather, so I rednecked a solution.

Temporary, a new spacer is on the way! But I'm riding around in my new spider today!

Does it smell like pine sap when you run it?

Honestly, will the moderators ban this guy. I knew Spider owners were skin-flints, but this guy won't even spring for a more stable wood product such as MDF or Poplar. I've poured $123.00 into my car and its like the Concours d' Elegance of the Spider world.

Well that is a first...

Make a note to tighten the carb down a bit after a couple of runs. The heat will dry the wood out even more, shrinking it a bit.

I have an aluminum spacer on order, it just hasn't gotten here yet. Hey, at least the pine doubles as an air freshener!

Do you have the thick paper gaskets for the opposing sides of the spacer? One between spacer and manifold, one between carb and spacer. Soak them in oil first. You can also make them from cork or that blue gasket material from Auto Bone.

Isaac has came to visit, so no Spider driving today. Installed the real carb spacer. Shortened and re-threaded the linkage rod to get full pedal travel. My epoxy fix for the 'ball' part of the linkage was starting to fail, so I drilled and tapped the ball, then red loctited it in place. When it quits raining, I'll test it out. My top only keeps the largest raindrops out.
