Autopsy of a fuel pump

Post by backyardbill »

This is a photo of the Bosch fuel pump from my car. The yellow arrow shows the crud that accumulated in the inlet side, and was trapped before the strainer (magenta arrow). I believe that was the cause of the pump's ultimate demise.

The car had sat for a very long time (12-13 years) and the fuel in the tank had disintegrated. I flushed the tank before restoring the car to running condition, but the crud was probably already in the pump body.

So, note to self: on next basket case project, remove pump and filter; remove and clean injectors; flush lines; flush tank, then install new pump and filter.
