Problems

Today after work, I tried to start the car, the starter engaged and the motor was turning, but it did not fire. It had never done that before, it was like it wasnt getting fuel. I went up and made a phone call and came back and the car fired. So as I was driving on my way home, the tach seemed to indicate a slightly higher rpm than I was used to seeing, and then jumped to over 4000 rpm and the car engine seemed to brake as in downshifting to a lower gear. I let off the gas and it seemed to return to normal. I started to roll again and this time the tach started wandering all over the place, then peeked over 4000 and the engine seemed to brake again as if I downshifted to a lower gear. I immediately went to neutral, tach went to 0,(auto tranny), and the engine quit. It wouldnt restart and battery seemed to drain somewhat quickly. Ended up towing it home. Is there any thoughts on what may have happened to me. By the way my car is an 81 fuel injected 2000.
