Auto Trans Pan gasket leaking

Post by Fiat88 »

I replaced my auto trans filter, gasket, and oil a few months ago. I noticed I was leaking trans fluid when the car sat a day or two. I checked the gasket and I see the fluid is weeping from the new gasket. When I installed it I made sure to follow the torque sequence. The gasket is some kind of cork/rubber I think, I didn't use any sealer. Any ideas to to get it to seal? Thanks.

You need to use sealer. I too had this problem and got some gasket sealer at the local auto parts store. Just make sure that the sealer is for transmissions, so that the fluid wont' eat through it. Also, before you replace the gasket, make sure the pan is nice and flat. You might need to get a nice level anvil and do a little hammering.

Do remember what kind of sealer? Was it RTV slicone type or permetex high tack type? Thanks for the help!

Any RTV silicone will hold up to trans fluid and heat. Personally, gasket and sealer bad combo. Either use gasket dry, or just use RTV, and use less than you think is neccessary. But Gasket will seal if everything done properly.

My mistake, I actually did use permatex hi tack gasket sealer on the new gasket I had put on and it still leaked. The gasket didn't come off in one piece and couldn't reuse it. :( I have new felpro gasket coming tomorrow. Thinking of smearing black RTV on the new gasket. Hopefully it seals.

rtv on trans pan gaskets is a bad thing. The rtv is very slippery and will cause the pan gasket to push out

Permatex makes a RTV specifically for auto trans gasket sealing.
"Automatic transmission RTV sealant" pn. 81180, got it at NAPA

We had a auto tranny replaced in my step daughters Cavalear & the guy just used regular RTV & within a week it progressive leaked more & more each day, I pulled the pan & resealed with this & not a drop since
