Timing Belt ready to go on .. a few ?'s

Post by sierraspider »

82 2L motor
I'm ready to install a new timing belt and tensioner bearing. My aux shaft was 35 degs of the mark and was causing it to bang like crazy against #2 rod. So if I've got it straight, the proceedure is as follows
1. Get crank to TDC (rotor will point to #4 wire)
2.Make sure both intake and exhaust are lined up with cam tower marks. Is there any tweaking for performance or should they line up exactly.
3.Set aux pulley to line up with tensioner bolt (1 o'clock)
4.Get everything in place and tighten it up.

Do I have to remove crank pulley to slip new belt on, if so is it keyed so I can maintain proper alignment with TDC mark or ?
Note: There is very little clearance between aux shaft pulley and crank pulley. To this point is doesn't look like they've rubbed but is this small clearance normal? Should I shim it out a bit(crank pulley)
I'm also replacing water pump, do I use some gasket seal with paper gasket? If so what's best?
Any other things I should be doing while I'm at this point? Seals or whatever?
If I'm forgetting something please let me know.
As always this forum is invaluable and I appreciate all of you who take the time to respond

Thanks to all
Dan

ok ... having just done this myself i will try and answer what i can....

can not speak too aux cam being off that many degrees and hitting stuff... and what should be done to make sure the insides of the engine are as they should be

crank nut does not have to come off to do the belt unless you are changing the seal behind it.. i did mine during this job as well as the aux cam seal too.... should have done the cam shaft seals too but that is another story.... yes it is keyed and it is a pain to get off..for me a chain wrench was a must have tool.. some searching will give you lots of info and opinions on all your questions.. what helped me a lot was keeping my search terms limited to specifics and searchiing thru "post titles" only.... playing around with the advanced search feature and you will get good quick

mine seemed close also but if you think about it they are were they are.... dont think that they will ever touch.... and noooo dont go shimming anything without some one far smarter than me saying it is a good idea

should have 2 gaskets that came with water pump... if not than mine were paper and seem to be working fine

as far as what to do while you are in there... again searching will help you decide... seeing what others do and recommend.... i enjoyed cleaning the engine bay and painting a few things while i was in there....

good luck and have fun... never had i done something even close to this level of engine maintenance before and it was quite rewarding in the end... and i could not have done it without this forum and the people on it.... dont be afraid to ask anything along the way

getting the belt past the crank pulley can be done but a real pita. here is a trick. before putting on the belt, loosen the tensioner bolt and spring housing. push the bearing as far to the left as possible and tighten it up so it stays there. threading the belt is an art. the aux shaft touches the belt on both sides, so starting with the crank, nest the belt in the pulley and pull tight on both sides up to the aux pulley. should be no slack in either side. now hold the belt in place and thread ccw. you will have to adjust the in and ex pulleys so the tooth falls in place. do the in first and rotate to take the slack out of the belt. do the same with the exhaust. now slip it over the tensioner and release both the spring bracket and tensioner bearing nut. when it all springs into place, tighten it all back up and rotate several times by hand using the crank nut for rotation, not the cam nuts. recheck timing marks.

I have the Fiat timing belt helper. If you send me your email address, I`ll send it to you. It`s a pdf file and this site won`t let me upload as an attachment, nor can I upload it to photobucket.
Or, if anyone can tell me how to upload a pdf to this site, feel free to share the knowledge.

As a trick I have always done, I paint all the pulleys and belt with nail varnish or similar where they all line up, before I remove anything. A direction arrow painted on doesn`t go amiss either. I find this way saves stupid mistakes.
My two cents ain't worth what it used to be

That's why this is such an amazing site. Great advice from all. I haven't turn a wrench on anything for a while and I'm finding it very fun and rewarding. I'll check out the links.

Thanks for responding
