electronic ignition conversion

Post by idocdan »

I purchased the 3 ohm Flamethrower coil and MR-LS1 Ignitor for my 72 spider. The distributor is marked S144, so this is supposed to be the right part. I installed as per instructions as near as I could tell, but had to put the points and condenser back in to get it to run. Does anyone have pics of the wiring at the coil? My original coil has a ceramic something (resistor, ballast?) attached to the coil bracket. The two wires (one is the points wire, which I spliced to the black from the Ignitor) from the 12V side I connected directly to the Neg on the new coil, and the wire that was on the other terminal of the original coil to the plus of the new coil along with the red from the Ignitor . Turns but won't start. What did I do wrong?
Thanks.

It should be as simple as running the leads from the ignitor unit to the coil. Red to the positive side of the coil and black to the negative. The old coil has an external resistor while the new one is internal and will not need the resistor. The negative side of the coil should have the black wire from the ignitor and the brown wire attached to feed the tach. The positive side will need the power feed (blue/black?) and red ignitor wire.

Thanks--and that is exactly how I wired it, but it would only turn over, not start. The only other thing that was mildly confusing was the installation of the half-round plate onto the distributor, but the Ignitor fit on that only one way (as the holes lined up), and there was only one way for it to screw onto the plate in the distributor (again, as the holes lined up). As soon as I rewired back to original using the new coil, it started right up.

I realize this is an old thread -but it seems no one updated as to what happened. And I was hoping that someone would have - but since that didn't happen, I am going to do so.

I also have a '72 and this is what I ended up doing:

Made damn sure I had the C plate in the right position based on the diameter of the dist. shaft - which is the .715" size. There is only one way to bolt it on - look at the diagram and make SURE you have it right side up. For mine, the lettering was stamped on the top side.

I used the Flamethrower coil as well. The green wire from the car (hot when ignition is on) and the red wire from the ignitor go to the positive side of the coil. The brown wire from the car (the tach) and the black wire from the ignitor go to the negative side of the coil THAT'S IT - no other wires are used. The white ballast resistor from the old coil is NOT used.

My car started first try.

I haven't checked the timing yet - going for a drive right now. If something is amiss -I will report back.

Hope this helps.

The parts were about $130 total. This does not compare to Mark's system in my opinion. I just replaced the points with an electronic pickup - and replaced the coil with a better unit as well.

I am not familiar with Mark's system - but believe it to be much more substantial in regards to tune-ability. For my uses, I didn't need that. I just didn't want to deal with points.
