I am doing a timing belt replacement & new seals up front & was planning on running without the timing cover on my 78 1800.
What I was wondering is what those of you that have done the same on the 1800 are using for a pointer to set the timing?
I know that the 2000 has it attached to the block but on the 1800 the timing marks are on the cover.
Suggestions, your solutions, pictures???

Re: Timing pointer on 1800
One way would be to determine TDC with a piston stop and use your result with mark and indicator on crank pulley.
The timing belt cover markings are not very accurate.
Keep your cover to protect the belt.

Re: Timing pointer on 1800
I am aware of the hazards of running w/o the cover & will be looking for the stock splash shield for under the front of the motor. I also have a line on a new timing cover if needed, my old one is warped & cut thru by the alt belt.
I really love the look of the exposed gears but functionality may win out in the future if any issues arise.
At the moment though I want to figure out how set the timing w/o the cover so setting at TDC & making a new pointer seems to be the way I want to go.
Can anyone show me an example of what you have done?

If you get a splash shield you may want to consider modifying it to make getting at the oil filter a lot easier. I cut away a large section and lined it with fuel tubing, slit lengthwise and filled with RTV, then pushed onto the sharp edge. It has held up well. Taking off the front spoiler and splash shield to get at the oil filter is a pain.
