Leaking Injectors Question

Post by RRoller123 »

I just noticed that when the fuel lines are at pressure, I get a little weeping under 2 of the injectors. Therefore I want to remove the fuel rail and injectors and Intake Manifold to clean and refurbish the whole thing, so I have a couple of basic questions:

I have disconnected the fuel rail feed and return lines and the Pressure Reg vacuum line. Can I now just unbolt the Intake Manifold and take the entire thing off with rail and injectors in place, or do I have to remove injectors and then the rail and Intake Manifold? I plan to send the rail out for cleaning and refurb. (The top plenum, lines, etc are already removed).

I assume there are a seal or two per injector that I will need to buy?

It looks like some of the flex line -to- metal line fuel rail connections are swaged, probably at the factory, and the flex lines are well cracked and will be replaced. How do we do these connections when we refurbish the system? I don't have swage tooling and doubt that I could get it or use it correctly. HP Fuel line and clamps? Seems a little worrisome to me.

Use Gasket Sealer on the Intake Manifold gasket?

Any advice from the experienced is appreciated. Thanks.

no need to remove the entire intake, just unbolt the fuel rail. Each injector has 2 seals. You can use high pressure hose and FI clamps to replace the leaking hoses

No need to pull the intake. One needs a 10mm socket and a 3-4 inch extension.
You will notice each injector has a retaining plate held in place with a 10mm nut.
Remove the nuts and the 10mm nut on the support (rail) You can see # 4 from above.
take all the electrical conections off the injectors and the ground leads. Any other electrical conectors that are in the way.
Disconect the fuel lines...lots of turns/thred on the main intake hard line to soft line.
Wiggle the rail and injectors out as one.
When it is on the bench, you can take/ cut the hoses and replace with proper fuel hose clamps, not the regular hose clamps we use on the rad hoses. Think the hose length was about 2 3/4 inches each. New rubber seals. Have the injectors checked and cleaned, flow tested (about $20-25 each) while out is a good investment I believe.
Again a note from my mistakes...when putting the clamps on, think ahead as to the tightening screw..you want access to them if not tight enough and you have a dribble when all is back together.

Now the saftey part.... from experience Disconect the battery ground first. Remove any rings. (starter lead is right in the vicinity and my ring contacted without disconecting the battery and fried my finger)
Lots of rags to soak up fuel dribbles. fire extinguisher real handy is good... then you won't need it.
Have fun and a good thing to do is change the hoses if still running high milage originals.

Thank you gentlemen! I will proceed along those lines, and just torque the Intake Manifold in place. One last question: The intake manifold is pretty dirty (on the outside) and I want to clean it up with some engine degreaser or carb cleaner. I assume that I should do this before pulling the injectors? Would they be harmed by either of the solvents?

I use brake cleaner, but if you want to really clean them up, I'd consider pulling the intake. If you just want to clean the top part, just take the 10-12, 10 mm bolts out, disconect the throttle cable and heater hose and give it a good scrub.
Have an artistic flare?? take a look at some of the engine pics and get wild with the paint brush.
With the top off, the lower part might be a bit more accessable and you can tidy that up to some extent without disturbing the gasket.
