Shift Rattle

Post by courtenay »

I'm going to take apart my shifter from the bottom to replace (place) the anti rattle clip and tighten up the nut at the bottom of the shifter. My question is, when I remove the cover off the bottom of the shifter, is it OK for the shift mechanism to drop down and rest on the driveshaft? Will it push back up into place OK?
Also, I understand from previous threads on this topic, the rattle clip goes in from the bottom. Is there any reason to take the boot off from the top - i.e. the inside of the car? And if so, how does one get the console apart to do so?

The "wood" shifter surround has four posts on the corners that snap down into clips in the console. If you've never had yours out it may be a pain, the clips are probably rusted and won't want to let go of the posts.
You got me thinking I may need to check my anti rattle clips. When I go on a drive with my better 1/2 she holds the shifter because the rattle drives her crazy. Me, I'm deaf, I don't hear it.

Don't want to hijack this post, but on a close side subject, how do you get the shift boot off? I bought a new one and cannot see any obvious way to take the old one off and put the new one on...

Going to have to check the rattle clip as well.
Bruce, the shifter can slide down and also go in from the bottom, but can drive you crazy trying to do it.I think it is still best to have someone push from the top and hold on while mucking about getting the washer and nut back on from the bottom. Grease the cups well.
I put the clip back on from the top, but mine is rattling a bit. Going to grab one from another trans and see how it goes on properly.

That's great, Chris. Let me know how you make out. I did a search on this topic on the Forum and got the impression that the clip went in from the bottom. I'm going to order the clip today so won't actually be working on it for a few weeks, so I'll be very interested to hear about how you make out with it.
