Window Winding mechanism

Post by georgeramos »

My passenger window mechanism quit today. i got the panel off and looked in there and nothing looks amiss. It seems the crank knob is "disengaged" from the mechanism itself as it just spins freely now. my question is: is the unit repairable or should i obtain a new one before pulling the glass etc out to remove the assembly?

Thanks all

Is the crank knob plastic and the splines inside stripped?

no, the splined mechanism spins freely even with the handle removed.

The winding mechanism is cheap and not real hard to replace. I replaced the passenger side when I first bought the car. Take pictures , it will help with running the new cable. There are bolts coming up from the bottom of the door to give slack in the cable and to adjust tension.

The Haynes manual says to remove the quarter glass and the window to change the mechanism. Is that what you did too Dennis?

Thanks for the reply.

All I did was remove the door panel and worked from there. I saw no need to remove any glass. Once the old cable is removed the glass will slide up and down freely so prop it up with something as you route the cable. I accually have manuals
but never think to look at them before I start working on something. I don't understand why they would say to remove the quarter glass.
